Biography

Dr. Michael Baum  

Director of the Biodiversity and Crop Improvement Program, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) 

Ph.D. Plant breeding and Cytogenetics, University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany 

Since joining ICARDA in 1992 as a biotechnologist, and later as director of the biodiversity and crop improvement program Dr. Michael Baum has overseen ICARDA’s biodiversity and crop management work in a number of countries across the Middle East and North Africa. Dr. Baum now is the Acting Deputy Director General Research and Research Team Leader - Breeding and Scaling of Improved Varieties of dryland cereals and pulses and Morocco Research Platform Manager.  In his role as DDGR he is develop strategies for the scaling up and scaling out of research findings in order to achieve development outcomes; this includes developing effective partnerships with national, regional and international development organizations as well as providing scientific and management leadership in planning, implementing, and monitoring a cohesive research for development agenda aligned with the organization’s strategic direction and results framework.
